How to Help
Hoosiers know that:
- Property taxes are too high and they continue to go up. Property taxes have increased over 450% from 1980 to 2005.
- Senior citizens, homeowners, farmers and businesses will lose their property if they cannot pay their property taxes. You never really own your own home!
- Other plans that have been proposed that would give local government the authority to permanently raise local taxes will only result in temporarily lowering property taxes.
- Currently churches and non-profit organizations, like the Salvation Army, are exempt from paying property taxes. This exemption could be removed by the General Assembly in any future legislative session.
- The only plan that would provide permanent protection to property owners is to repeal property taxes in the Constitution.
First of all, we must alert the citizens of Indiana about this effort and get them to join with us. Secondly, we must contact the candidates and legislators to see who will stand with us. Thirdly, we must let the people in our grassroots network, as well as others around the state, know which legislators and candidates are standing with us.
If the other property tax plans are adopted next year you will see your local taxes increase dramatically and your property taxes will only go down temporarily. This is historically what has happened in Indiana because the legislature subsequently gives local government the authority to once again increase property taxes. Only Advance America’s plan provides permanent property tax protection for homeowners, farmers and businesses. Only Advance America’s plan protects churches from being taxed.
